1. Student makes a T-chart with transition words that link ideas to show cause and effect.  Student understands that transition words help the sentences flow and help the reader recognize the relationships between ideas.  Student understands:

• Cause transition words help show the reader why something happen.  These are transition words are words such as, because, since, on account of, as a result of, etc.  These words can help the reader identify the cause of an event, problem or situation.
• Effect transition words help show the effect of the event, problem or situation.  These are words such as, as a result, hence, therefore, subsequently, consequently, thus, etc.  These words can help the reader identify the effect of an event, problem or situation.

2. Given an informative text, student identifies the transition words that show an author is adding more examples, evidence or information.  Student correctly understands that transition words help the sentences flow and help the reader recognize the relationships between ideas.  Student understands that addition transition words signal the reader that another idea is forthcoming.  Student correctly identifies transition words that show an author is adding more examples, evidence or information, such as first, second, third, also, in addition, secondly, furthermore, and, or, nor, finally, another, moreover, etc.
