- Sentence without an ellipsis: According to an article I read, “The Lego Movie, written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, was one of the most popular movies of 2014.”
- Sentence with an ellipsis: According to an article I read, “The Lego Movie … was one of the most popular movies of 2014.”
- Student identifies different examples of an ellipsis used in texts to indicate an omission.

- Student identifies reasons a writer would choose to eliminate information from a direct quotation. Reasons a writer chooses to eliminate information from a direct quotation include, but are not limited to, for clarity, to be concise, and to eliminate irrelevant information.
- Student constructs original sentences that use an ellipsis to indicate an omission. The sentences constructed by the student correctly use an ellipsis to indicate information that is omitted.
- Student evaluates the use of an ellipsis in a sentence to determine if it effectively achieves the intended effect. For example, the student correctly evaluates a writer’s use of punctuation to determine the effect it has on the meaning of a sentence. Appropriate use of an ellipsis to indicate an omission should result in a more clear and concise sentence.
