Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

  1. Casey purchased a pack of assorted flower seeds and planted them in her garden. When the first 25 flowers bloomed, 12 were pink, 6 were orange, 4 were blue, and the rest white. Find the probability that a flower that blooms will be white.
  1. Larry has an unfair coin. When he tosses the coin, the probability of getting heads is . If Larry tosses the coin 100 times, about how many tails should he expect to get?
  1. Sally rolled a number cube 150 times and recorded the outcomes in this table: Using her data, what is the experimental probability of rolling a 5? Express your answer as a fraction in lowest terms.

  1. In a study of 300 randomly selected students, 186 of them take the bus to school.  If the school has 2000 students that attend, how many students would the district expect to take a bus?  If each bus can hold 75 students, how many buses does the district need to have? Show your work.
  1. You and your friend conduct an experiment to see how many times they can toss a plastic cup and have it land upright.  The results are in the table below.  What is your best estimate of the probability of the cup landing upright? Show your work.

 

  1. Chris is conducting a survey of favorite types of movies, using the following categories: horror, comedy, science fiction, and comedy.  Of the 40 people he surveyed, 12 said they preferred horror films. Based on the results of the survey, if 3000 people took the same survey, about how many would be expected to prefer horror movies? Explain your answer.
