Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- Identify places in an informational writing passage that are already using a word, phrase or clause to link opinions and reasons.
- Create a list of words, phrases and clauses that could be used to link ideas within informational writing.
- Modify given sentences in an informational writing passage to include connecting words or phrases.
- Construct sentences that link ideas using an appropriate word or phrase.
- Revise writing to demonstrate strong logical connections between ideas within informative writing.
- Explain why writing is stronger with the inclusion of connecting elements to precisely link ideas.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Student identifies where connecting words, phrases, and clauses are being used to connect information within and across categories in the informative writing. The student should mark these words, phrases, and clauses in his or her writing.
- Student develops a list of words, phrases and clauses that could be used to link ideas. (another, for example, also, because, secondly, etc)
- Student revises given sentences/paragraph to include connecting words or phrases that demonstrates the appropriate relationship between the elements of the sentences.
- Student constructs a sentence that links elements in the information writing piece using a connecting word that fittingly shows the appropriate relationship between the elements.
- Student revises informative writing piece to develop a logical flow of ideas through linking ideas with appropriate words that show an accurate connection. Student will critically evaluate the ideas in the writing that are connected and those that aren’t connected and make revisions when necessary to further strengthen the writing. Connecting words/phrases should be used accurately and meaningfully.
- Student can explain why his/her informative writing piece is stronger with the addition of connecting words and phrases used appropriately. Explanations might include a discussion about the connecting words chosen and the ideas that are connected using them.
