Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student identifies text features that are in an informational text. These text structures might include chapters, subject headings, charts, graphs, bold print words, captions, labels, and maps.

  2. Student uses text features that assist in identifying main points in an informational text. These text structures might include chapters, subject headings, charts, graphs, bold print words, captions, labels, and maps.

  3. Student is able to summarize the information in text features. Doing this involves being able to take the text feature and explain, summarize, or otherwise share the information that is contained in the text feature.

  4. Student compares and contrasts the information found in text features with the information in the text. Text features might include chapters, subject headings, charts, graphs, bold print words, captions, labels, and maps. After using the text features to identify main points in the informational text, the student compares and contrasts what is found within the text.

  5. By combining information from the text features and the text, the student is able to understand the main points more deeply. By using information from both sources, the student compares, contrasts, and combines what has been learned to provide a more thorough understanding of the topic.

  6. After using text features within the text, the student may need to revise his/her current understanding of material based on new learning. If contradictory information is found, the student further investigates the conflicting information to determine what is most correct.
