The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

- Define syntax.
- Identify examples of simple, compound, and complex sentences in a text.
- Determine how to combine simple sentences into complex or compound sentences.
- Develop a text based on a writing prompt and edit that text to include varied sentence structure.
- Create sentences using the generative sentence technique that demonstrate sentence variation.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Student defines syntax as the order of words, phrases, and clauses in a sentence. Syntax is necessary to create varied sentence structure for interest and meaning.
- Students will identify simple sentences and complex sentences in a text. Teacher can choose any passage or give examples of simple, compound, and complex sentences. Student will demonstrate an understanding of:
- Simple sentence - contains a subject and a verb with no dependent clause
- Compound sentence – contains two or more sentences combined by a semi-colon or a comma and conjunction
- Complex sentence – contains an independent and dependent clause
- Student will identify ways in which to combine simple sentences into complex or compound sentences. Student can be given sentences or can evaluate sentences in a text.
- Student demonstrates an ability to develop a text in which simple, complex, and compound sentences are present. Student demonstrates an ability to edit a text ensuring that there is an ample varied sentence structure to enhance meaning.
