Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:

Activities
- What is the plural form of the following noun?
- List the nouns that are in the following sentence. Label each noun as either singular or plural.
- Is the following plural noun regular or irregular? Explain how you can tell.
- Complete the sentence with the correct form of the noun.
- Read the following paragraph. Find and correct all of the mistakes with singular and plural nouns.
- Create posters that explain the basic rules for changing singular nouns to plural nouns. Your poster should state the rule, show examples, and include a picture.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students will follow the standard rules for making words plural and will apply these rules to given nouns. Students will know when to just add –s, add –es, change a –y to –i and add –es, use a different form of the word, or make no changes to the word.
- Students will identify the nouns in the sentence and will identify them as being singular or plural. They should recognize word endings that indicate a plural noun, as well as using the context of the sentence.
- Students will identify plural nouns as being regular or irregular based on the plural form. They will recognize whether an –s was added or whether another process was followed to create the plural noun.
- Students will read sentences and based on the context, decide if the missing noun should be singular or plural. Students will add the appropriate word to complete the sentence.
- Students will proofread a paragraph that has mistakes with singular and plural nouns. Students will need to recognize when the wrong form of the noun was used (a singular noun used when a plural noun should have been, or a plural noun used when a singular noun was needed). They will also need to recognize when a plural noun was misspelled. All mistakes should be corrected.
- Students will create posters to illustrate basic rules for changing singular nouns to plural. The poster should explain the proper procedures for each rule, examples, and a picture to go with the examples. A poster should be created for the following rules:
- Just add –s
- Add –es
- Change –y to –i and add –es
- Change the form of the word
- No change to the word
