Graptolites, which resemble tiny saw blades, were common fossils from the Ordovician and Silurian, but for a long time questions arose regarding the type of animal it may have represented. Most graptolites are thought to have been planktonic, floating or slowly sinking through the water. Numerous graptolites have been used as index fossils.
