Rationale

Students need to learn to recognize even and odd numbers in order to be better able to complete more difficult math skills, like multiplying and dividing.

Lesson Essential Question(s)

Big Idea:  The base-ten number system is a way to organize, represent and compare numbers using groups of ten and place value.

Essential Question:  How are even and odd numbers different?

Concepts:   Equivalence: Whole Numbers to 100;  Patterns: apply patterns and properties

Competencies:  Apply, as well as identify and describe number patterns and properties such as odd and even

Suggested Instructional Strategies

W:  The objectives of the lesson will be stated in the very beginning of the lesson of the first day in
the form of essential questions.

H:  Students will be able to understand even and odd numbers so that in the future they can complete more difficult math skills/concepts.

E:  Students will independently and in small groups.

R: Students will need to utilize the even or odd poem in order to determine whether a number is even or odd.

E:  Students will write and verbally express their answers/questions.

T:  Students will be given single or double digit numbers to identify even or odd depending upon their skill level.

O:  The teacher will model/explain/scaffold all skills/concepts/activities before students complete them.

 

Instructional Procedures

Day 1:  Introduce Even and Odd

  1. Watch Even and Odd Brianpop Jr. video clip
  2. Use Even and Odd flipchart to introduce the topic and essential questions.
  3. Use frog manipulatives to represent numbers 0-9.  Have students assist with determining if each number representation has a partner (even) or not (odd).
  4. Review Even and Odd Poem

Day 2:  Review Even and Odd, single digit

  1.  Review Even and Odd Poem
  2. Explain and Play Even Steven and Odd Todd Gameto practice identifying single digit even and odd numbers.

Day 3:  Introduce two-digit Even/Odd numbers

  1. Review Even and Odd Poem
  2. Use Even and Odd Flipchart to introduce identifying two-digit even and odd numbers.
  3. Explain and complete the Even and Odd Number Sort

Day 4:  Review identifying single and double digit even and odd numbers

  1. Review Even and Odd Poem
  2. Even and Odd Math Journal Entry
  3. Hen House Sort

Day 5:  Review and Assessment

  1. Review Even and Odd Poem
  2. Review identifying Even and Odd Numbers by displaying a number and having the students hold up the even or odd student popsicle stick signs.
  3. Even and Odd Assessment
