Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. List three adaptations (physical or behavioral) that allow animals to survive drastic weather changes due to changing seasons.
  1. Monarch butterflies migrate to warmer climates during winter months.  What do you think might happen to a population of these butterflies if they stayed in cold climates during the winter?  Make two predictions.

  2. Before the Industrial Revolution in England, the bark of trees was a light color.  Moths that lived in the area were also light in color.  During the Industrial Revolution, air pollution increased which caused the bark on the trees to darken.  How do you think the population of light colored moths was initially impacted?  If the species evolved and became darker in color, how do you think the population of dark moths was initially impacted?  How do you think the sizes of these populations changed over time?
  1. Corinne thinks that Global Warming will not have a large impact on animals that do not live in coastal regions.  Write a paragraph to explain why Corinne is incorrect.

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Hibernation
    • Migration
    • Grow thicker fur
    • Change color of fur to camouflage with snow
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • The butterfly population may die due to the color temperatures.
    • The butterfly population my decrease.  Some may die due to lack of food or cold temperatures while other might be able to survive.
    • The butterflies will adapt to the cold temperatures.
    • The butterflies might find shelter and hibernate.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • The light moth population decreased because they did not blend in with the surroundings anymore and were eaten by predators.
    • The dark moth population increased because the blended in with the surroundings and were not eaten by predators.
    • When the two populations produced offspring, the new generation of dark moths was much larger than the population of light moths.
    • Eventually light moths will disappear from this area.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Global Warming will increase the temperature of all regions on Earth.
    • It will impact animals in coastal regions because they will lose their habitat.  This will cause these animals to move inland.  These coastal animals will now create competition for animals that live in other biomes.
    • Animals that do not live in coastal regions will also have to adapt to higher temperatures.
    • If temperatures increase enough, some animals that migrate stop doing so.  This will create more competition in winter months.
