Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity

  1. Name 5 factors that are necessary for life in any ecosystem.  Identify if they are biotic or abiotic.
  1. Predict what might happen to a population of gray wolves if all but one of their food sources disappears from their ecosystem.  Use facts to defend your prediction.
  1. Write a paragraph to explain at least three reasons why diversity is important within an ecosystem.

    • Wolves need food to survive.
    • If they only have one food source, there is not enough food to support a large population.
    • The wolves will move to a new habitat.
    • If the wolves do not move to another habitat, the population will decrease.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Multiple food sources
    • Natural population control
    • Healthy ecosystems can recover from a disaster more quickly than an unhealthy ecosystem.
    • More genetic diversity will help different species adapt and evolve
    • Help preserve the Earth (help clean water and air)
