Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- Make a list of five themes or main ideas from a given text.
- Explain how your theme or main idea relates to the text as a whole.
- Locate at least two quotations that relate to each of your main ideas.
- Summarize the meaning of each quote you have chosen.
- Compare your summary of the quotation to your original explanation of the theme or main idea to see if the two correlate in meaning.
- Evaluate your quotations to select the one that best illustrates how your theme or main idea relates to the text as a whole.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students correctly identify key themes or main ideas from a text about which they may draw conclusions or inferences.
- Students are able to explain, in speech or in writing, how each individual theme or main idea relates to the text as a whole.
- Students are able to recognize multiple details in the text that directly illustrate these generalizations of the selected text.
- Students are able to paraphrase or summarize the quotation in order to demonstrate their understanding of the quotation.
- Students are able to compare what they are trying to prove (their generalization) with what the text says (their paraphrase of the text). Students should be able to identify if their ideas are connecting.
- Students are able to evaluate their own work to choose one quotation that best illustrates their idea over another.
