Activities
- What tool is used to measure atmospheric pressure?
- Name one warm ocean current. Name one cold ocean current.
- Use the globe below to draw and label the different wind patterns on Earth.
- How does a warm ocean current affect the temperature on nearby land? How does a cold ocean current affect the temperature on nearby land?
- Compare and contrast the weather in Antarctica and in the Amazon Rainforest. How is the weather influenced by wind patterns, ocean currents, atmospheric pressure, and temperature.
Answer Key/Rubric
- A barometer is used to measure atmospheric pressure.
- Warm ocean currents include, but are not limited to:
- Agulhas
- Alaskan
- Brazil
- East Australian
- Gulf Stream
- Kuroshio
- Leeuwin
- North Atlantic Drift
- North Equatorial
- North Pacific
- Norwegian
- Somali
- South Equatorial
Cold ocean currents include:
- Alaskan
- Benguela
- California
- Canary
- East Greenland
- East Wind Drift
- Labrador
- Oyashio
- West Australian
- West Wind Drift
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- A warm ocean current will warm the air.
- This will increase the air temperature.
- The nearby land will in turn be warmed.
- A cold ocean current will cool the air.
- This will decrease the air temperature.
- The nearby land will in turn be cooled.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- The weather in Antarctica is cold and dry.
- Antarctica is influenced by the Polar Easterlies. These winds blow cold air.
- The East Wind Drift is the closest ocean current to Antarctica. It is a cold ocean current. This current will cool the air and the nearby land.
- It is far away from the Equator, so it does not get direct sunlight. This makes the temperatures cold.
- There is often snow. There is rarely rain. This is due to low temperatures.
- The weather in the Amazon rainforest is hot and humid.
- The Amazon is influenced by the Trade Winds. These winds blow toward the Equator. They are warm.
- The Brazil and the South Equatorial currents are near the Amazon. Both of these are warm ocean currents. They will warm the air and nearby land.
- The Amazon Rainforest is located on the Equator. It gets a lot of direct sunlight. This makes the temperatures very hot.
- There is often rain. There is never snow. This is due the high temperatures.
