Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. What type of map would be best if you wanted to show where mountains, rivers, and lakes were located in Pennsylvania?

    Use the map below to answer questions #2-3.

  2. Name three lakes in Pennsylvania.

  3. Which river forms the border between Pennsylvania and New Jersey?
  1. You are asked to create a model to show the locations of the watersheds in Pennsylvania.  Which model will you use?  Why?

  2. You are asked to create a model to compare and contrast a lake ecosystem and a river ecosystem in Pennsylvania.  Which model will you use?  Why?

Use the maps of Pennsylvania and Kansas to answer the question below.

  1. Based on your knowledge of Pennsylvania and its physical features, use the map of Kansas to draw conclusions about its landforms.  How is like Pennsylvania?  How is it different?

    • Can show boundaries between watersheds
    • Can see all of the different watersheds easily in one picture
    • Can compare and contrast different parts of the state easily

    Acceptable explanations may include, but are not limited to:
  • Can show different animal and plant species
  • Show relationships between different parts of the ecosystem
  • Easily see similarities and differences between two ecosystems

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

    • Both states have a somewhat rectangular shape.
    • Both states have rivers.
    • Pennsylvania has mountains.  Kansas has hills.
    • No plateaus in Kansas.
