Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- Define a dominant trait.
- Define a recessive trait.
- Both of Amber’s parents have dark hair. Amber has light hair. Which hair color is dominant? Which is recessive? Why does Amber express a different trait than her parents?
- Trevor has detached earlobes and cannot roll his tongue. His wife, Sophia, also has detached earlobes, but she can roll her tongue. They believe if they had a child, it would have detached earlobes and would be able to roll its tongue. Are they correct? Use facts and/or Punnett squares to explain your reasoning.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- A dominant trait is a characteristic that is expressed based on a dominant gene.
- Dominant traits are expressed when an offspring has a homozygous dominant genotype of a heterozygous genotype.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- A recessive trait is a characteristic that is expressed based on recessive genes.
- Recessive traits are only expressed when an offspring has a homozygous recessive genotype.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- Dark hair is a dominant trait.
- Light hair is a recessive trait.
- Both of Amber’s parents must have heterozygous genotypes.
- Amber’s parents had a 25% chance of producing an offspring with a homozygous recessive genotype.
- Amber has a homozygous recessive genotype and expresses the recessive trait of light hair.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- Trevor and Sophia both show the dominant earlobe phenotype.
- They both have either a homozygous dominant genotype or a heterozygous genotype for earlobes.
- The probability that the baby will show the dominant trait for earlobes (detached) is about 94%.
- There is a 6% chance the baby will show the recessive trait for earlobes (attached).
- The baby will only express the recessive phenotype if both parents have the heterozygous genotype.
- Even if both parents have the heterozygous genotype, there is only a 25% chance the baby will have attached earlobes.
- Trevor shows the recessive phenotype for tongue rolling.
- He has a homozygous recessive genotype for tongue rolling.
- Sophia shows the dominant phenotype for tongue rolling.
- She has either a homozygous dominant genotype or a heterozygous genotype for tongue rolling.
- The probability that the baby will show the dominant trait for tongue rolling is higher (75%) than the baby showing the recessive trait (25%).
