Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Define mitosis.

  2. Define meiosis.

  2. Through mitosis a parent cell divides to create two identical daughter cells.  Predict what might happen if a defective cell goes through the process of mitosis.  Use facts to explain your thinking.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Mitosis is the phase in cell division when the nucleus splits into two parts.

  2. Meiosis occurs only in reproductive cells.  It is the process in which cells divide to form sperm cells in males and egg cells in females.
  1.  Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Interphase – cell grows and carries out normal life activities; cell prepares for division; copies its DNA
  • Mitosis – when the cell’s nucleus divides; has 5 stages
  • Prophase – nuclear membrane disappears; DNA condenses into chromosomes
  • Metaphase – chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
  • Anaphase – chromatids of each chromosome split into two chromosomes; separated chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell
  • Telophase – new nuclear membranes form around each group of chromosomes
  • Cytokinesis – cell’s cytoplasm is divided between the two new cells

Similarities:

  • Both start with one parent cell.
  • Both result in new cells.
  • Sequence of events (interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis) is the same.

Differences:

  • Sequence occurs once in mitosis.
  • Sequence occurs twice in meiosis.
  • Mitosis creates 2 daughter cells.
  • Meiosis creates 4 daughter cells.
  • Meiosis only occurs in reproductive cells.
  • Mitosis creates 2 cells with identical DNA.
  • Meiosis creates 4 cells that do not have identical DNA.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Meiosis occurs in reproductive cells.
  • It is the process in which cells divide to form sperm cells in males and egg cells in females.
  • The sperm cell holds half of the chromosomes necessary for humans.  The egg cell holds the other half.
  • When a sperm fertilizes an egg cell, a zygote is formed with all of the necessary human chromosomes.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Mitosis is the process when a cell’s nucleus divides.
  • Two identical daughter cells are created from one parent cell.
  • The two daughter cells’ DNA is identical to the parent cell.
  • If the parent cell is defective, then the daughter cells will also be defective.
  • All of the cells that are created with the defective DNA will pass down the same defects.
  • This will harm the tissue/organs/organ system/organism.
