Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. What is an open-looped system?  List 2 examples.

  2. What is a closed-looped system?  List 2 examples.
  1. Explain how a closed-looped system is affected by feedback.
  1. Your friend Carlos wants to construct a new heating and cooling system for his home.  Would you recommend that he construct an open-looped systems or a closed-looped system?  Why?  Use at least three facts to defend your recommendation.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • An open-looped system does not measure feedback to determine if its goal has been accomplished.
      • Toaster
      • Washing machine
      • Dryer with timer
      • Irrigation sprinkler system
      • Light switch
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • A closed-looped system is a type of system that uses feedback to control itself.
      • Thermostat
      • Cruise control on a car
      • Hot water heater
  1.  Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Feedback is information that is measured and used to reach the goal of the closed-looped system.
    • A closed-looped system is able to monitor its output through feedback.
    • The system can compare the actual output with the anticipated output and adjust accordingly.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Open-looped systems are simple.
    • Open-looped systems are stable.
    • Open-looped systems are easy to construct.
    • Open-looped systems can be inaccurate.
    • Open-looped systems can be unreliable.
    • Closed-looped systems are reliable.
    • Closed-looped systems are not affected by outside noise sources.
    • Closed-looped systems are difficult to construct.
    • Closed-looped systems can be unstable.
