Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. List three ways that you could gather evidence.
  1. Use evidence to explain why the Earth has night and day.

  2. Use evidence to describe the difference between sedimentary and igneous rocks.
  1. Create a model to illustrate an animal’s lifecycle.  Provide an explanation and description of each stage of life for the animal (i.e. before birth, infancy, adolescence, adulthood).

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • The Earth orbits the sun.
    • The Earth revolves on its axis.
    • Half of the Earth always faces the sun.
    • The side of Earth that faces the sun receives light from the sun.  This is daytime.
    • Half of the Earth always faces away from the sun.
    • The side of Earth that faces away from the sun is dark.  This is nighttime.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Sedimentary rocks can form from pieces of larger rocks that have been broken away through erosion.
    • Sedimentary rocks can form from ancient, decomposed plant parts.
    • Sedimentary rocks can form when water evaporates and minerals that were dissolved in the water are left behind.  These minerals crystalize and form a rock.
    • Igneous rocks can form when magma cools inside the Earth.
    • Igneous rocks can form when lava cools on Earth’s surface.
  1. Use the following rubric to grade the student's response.  Answers will vary.
