Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons

Activities
- Define clause.
- Define phrase.
- Categorize phrases and clauses based on understanding of their definitions.
- Develop a text that includes both clauses and phrases, alternating sentence structure.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Student defines clause as a group of words that can act as a sentence, but is not necessarily a complete sentence on its own. All clauses contain both a subject and a predicate, which always contains a verb.
- Student defines phrase as a group of two or more words that does not have the subject and verb combination and does not form a predicate.
- Student will categorize clauses and phrases based on their understanding of the definitions in either student-chosen or teacher-chosen examples.
- Student demonstrates an ability to develop a text using both clauses and phrases. Students can be asked to underline clauses and circle phrases in order to gauge their understanding of each.
