Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. How does the fossil fuel usage in the United States compare to the energy usage of other resources (such as wind, water, etc.)?

  2. Identify ways you can reduce the use of fossil fuels.
  1. Infer what could happen if fossil fuels continue to be used at their current rate. Provide details on fossil fuel formation to support your claim.

  2. Complete the following table by classifying each energy source as renewable or nonrenewable and stating an advantage and disadvantage of each.

  1. Fossil fuels are energy sources made from the remains of once living organisms, such as coal, natural gas, and oil.

  2. A renewable resource is a resource that can be replaced through natural processes almost as fast as it can be used.

  3. A nonrenewable resource is a resource that cannot be replaced as fast as it is used.
  1. Fossil fuel usage far exceeds the use of other energy resources.  In the United States, fossil fuel usage accounts for approximately 80% of the energy use.

  2. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    Walking, riding a bike, using public transportation, carpooling, turning off appliances when not being used, keeping thermostat are reasonable temperatures, researching and using renewable energy sources
  1. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources since they cannot be made as fast as they are used. In fact, since many are made of dead swamp plants and dead ocean organisms, they take millions of years to form. At their rate of creation, it is impossible to replenish the supply to compensate for how much they are used. If used unwisely, the world can run out of their supply of fossil fuel. In the meantime, it is important to find uses for other energy sources so we don’t use fossil fuels as much and have an alternative when fossil fuels are nonexistent.
