Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. What 3 dimensional figure can be made by the following net?
  2. What 3 dimensional figure can be made by the following net?

  1. Draw a net that would create a rectangular prism.
  1. Draw a net that would make a triangular pyramid.
  1. Nicole cut open a cube shaped tissue box.  How many of the faces will be squares?
  1. When you draw a net for a triangular prism, describe what shapes it will include.
  1. You are asked to make a rectangular pyramid.  What shape will the base(s) be?  What shape will the faces be?  Draw the net.
  1. Look at the nets pictured. Can each of them be folded to create a 3 dimensional figure?  If not, identify any that won’t work?  Explain your answer.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Triangular prism
  1. Cube
  1. Nets can vary, but should be similar to:
  1. Nets can vary, but should be similar to:
  1. All 6 of the faces on a cube are a square.
  1. When you draw a net for a triangular prism it will have 2 triangles for the ends and 3 rectangles for the sides.
  1. The base of a rectangular pyramid is a rectangle.  The faces will be triangles.

Nets may vary, but must include:

  • One base that is a rectangle
  • Four faces that are triangles
  • Each triangle will have a base that is on one of the rectangle sides.
  • Possible example :
  1. No, all of the nets in the problem can’t be folded to make a rectangular prism.  Figure 2 will not work.

Students reasons might include, but are not limited to:

  • When you fold on the edges all the rectangles will not meet.
  • To make a rectangular prism the net must include opposite faces that are equal and parallel.
  • Net 2 only has 2 sets of opposite faces that are equal.
