Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Write 1,463 in expanded form.
  1. Write 5,409 in word form.
  1. Write eighty two thousand, nine hundred twenty eight in standard form. 
  1. During the first weekend in July an amusement park sold 10,056 tickets.  Write the amount of tickets they sold in expanded form.
  1. Jerry bought a raffle ticket at a fundraiser and his number is 4,608.  What number should he be listening for over the speaker when they are calling out the winner?
  1. Fill in the table below with the given information.

  1. A question on a math test asked students to write 500,000 + 7,000 + 100 + 60 + 8 in word form.  The answer written on one of the papers was: five hundred seventy thousand, one hundred sixty eight.  Is the word form correct? Explain.

  • Watch for the word “and” as this would be incorrect and is a common mistake

  1. The student answered the question incorrectly. 

Reasons might include, but are not limited to:

  • In word form, the student mixed up the place value.
  • The student wrote five hundred seventy thousand and it should say five hundred seven thousand.
  • The student thought the 7,000 was 70,000 when writing the word form from the expanded form.
