Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

Activities

  1. How many hundreds are in the number 6,000?
  1. In 8,552, the 5 in the hundreds place is __________ the value of the 5 in the tens place.

  1. Look at the two numbers and write a statement that describes the relationship between the underlined digits in each number.

  1. Write a number that has a 7 in the tens place, 4 in the thousands place, 0 in the hundreds place and a 4 in the ones place.  Then write a sentence that describes the relationship between the two 4s in the number.
  1. Marissa wrote the number 471,653 in her math notebook.  She was trying to write another number that has the digit 6 in it and has a value 100 times the value of the 6 in the first number that she wrote.  Give an example and explain.

  • In the first number the 6 is in the tens place so it is worth 60.  In the second number the 6 is in the one thousands place so it has a value of 6,000. The value of the 6 in the second number is 100 times greater than the value of the 6 in the first number.

Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:

  • The relationship between the values of the digit 4 is one is in the ones place equaling 4 and the other is in the thousands place so it has a value of 4,000.  The relationship is the value of the first 4 in the number is 1000 times the value of the second 4 in the number.

  • The digit in the first number that she wrote was a 6 in the hundreds place so it has a value of 600.
  • She was trying to find a value that was 100 times that
  • 600(100) = 60,000
  • You need to write a number that has a 6 in the ten thousands place.
