Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

George has two trays of brownies that are the same size.  He needs to divide them into the same number of equal parts.  One tray of has of the brownies frosted and the other tray has of the brownies frosted.  How many parts could each tray be divided into?  Is there more than one answer? Explain.
  1. The bathroom floor at your house is getting new tiles.  Your parents are creating a pattern that has of the tiles being blue.  What other fractions can represent the part of the tiles that will be blue?  Use the models to show your work.

    • Multiply both the numerator and denominator by the same number to get an equivalent fraction

  2. Each brownie tray could be divided into 10 equal parts.  Yes, there is more than one answer.  Reason might include, but are not limited to:

    • When finding equal size parts in the brownie trays you are finding a common denominator of 2 and 5.
    • You could list the common multiples of 2 and 5.
    • The LCM of 2 and 5 is 10, so any multiple of 10 would also be a possible answer.

  3. Answers will vary, but will include a fraction that is equivalent to . Student must multiply both the numerator and denominator by the same number to find the equivalent fraction.
