Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. Explain the relationship between water and a tree within the water cycle.
  1. Explain the relationship between air and a lion with their ecosystem.
  1. An ecosystem contains both living and nonliving things.  Name one living and one nonliving thing in the same ecosystem and explain how they are related.

  1. Student is able to describe a relationship between water and a tree within the water cycle.

       Answers may include, but are not limited to:

  • Trees rely on water to survive
  • When precipitation occurs, the tree absorbs water
  • When more water than it needs is absorbed, the tree loses the extra water through evaporation
  • The evaporation then condensates and precipitates again in an ongoing cycle

  1. Student is able to describe a relationship between air and a lion within their ecosystem while explaining some effects this relationship has on other components within the system.

       Answers may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lions rely on the air to breathe
  • Oxygen is needed to sustain life for many animals, including lions
  • Lions produce carbon dioxide
  • Plants and trees need oxygen to survive
  • Plants and trees absorb and transform the air back into oxygen for the lion, or other animals to breathe
  1. Student can identify a relationship between a living and nonliving thing and explain how they are related to each other.
