Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify words in a given selection that are unfamiliar.

  2. Recall and list basic facts, details, or events from your reading.
  1. Use context clues to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words from the passage.

  2. Make at least two predictions about the story based on your understanding of what has already happened.
  1. Read a selection orally, with fluency and accuracy. Be able to explain the purpose of the selection and use a rate and expression appropriate to your understanding of the text.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. The student will identify unfamiliar words in a given reading selection. The student will recognize whether they know the meaning of a word as it is used in the selection, and will mark any words that they do not know.

  2. After reading the selection, the student will recall and generate a list of basic facts, details, or events of the selection. Look for the student to recall enough of the selection to show a general understanding of what it was about. This is an important foundational skill for reading out loud with meaning and fluency.

  3. The student will, after locating unfamiliar words, return to the selection and will use context clues to determine the meanings of the unfamiliar words. Look for the student to gain meaning of the word from the sentence or the sentences around it. The student should keep a list of words they define using context clues, as further instances of the word(s) may provide clearer pictures of its meaning.

  4. The student will show his/her understanding of what he/she has read by making two predictions based on the selection they have read. The student should use this task as an opportunity to think about the mood and purpose of the selection, understanding of which will assist him/her as he/she reads it aloud appropriately.

  5. The student will read a passage aloud, after previewing the text.  The student will show his/her understanding of the purpose of the text by selecting an appropriate rate and expression as he/she reads.  Look for the student to self-correct as necessary, and to read with fluency and accuracy.
