Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- List words, clauses or phrases that can be used to link elements in persuasive writing to show order and transitions.
- Identify the places in a writing sample that are already using words, phrases or clauses to link opinions and reasons.
- Construct sentences that link opinions and reasons using an appropriate word or phrase.
- Revise sentences using an appropriate connecting word or phrase.
- Revise writing to demonstrate strong, logical connections between opinions and reasons.
- Explain why writing is stronger with the inclusion of connecting elements to precisely link ideas.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Student constructs a list of conjunctive adverbs that can be used in linking two independent clauses or sentences together. Some examples may include: for instance, for example, however, in addition, likewise, now, therefore, thus.
- Student identifies where connecting words, phrases, and clauses are being used to connect elements in the writing. Student should mark these words, phrases, and clauses in the given writing sample.
- Given a set of opinions and matching reasons, the student constructs a sentence that links the opinion to the reason using a connecting word that fittingly shows the appropriate relationship between the elements.
- Student is given a set of sentences that all relate to the same topic/concept. Students will revise these sentences to include linking words and phrases between the opinions and reasons.
- Student revises opinion writing piece to develop a logical argument through linking opinions and reasons with appropriate words that show an accurate connection. Student will critically evaluate the elements in the writing that are connected and those that aren’t connected and make revisions when necessary to further strengthen the writing. Connecting words/phrases should be used accurately and meaningfully.
- Student should explain why his/her opinion piece is stronger with the addition of connecting words and phrases used appropriately. Explanations might include a discussion about the connecting words and the sentence elements chosen.
