Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define pattern.
  1. Identify one phase of the moon.
  1. Cause and effect: what causes the different phases of the moon?
  1. Summarize the phases of the moon.
  1. “A lunar month and a month are the same thing”. Critique this statement.
  1. Develop a logical argument as to why the Moon phases going in a pattern make it easy to predict the phases of the Moon.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. A pattern is defined as a regular and repeated way in which something happens.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
Any phase of the moon (e.g., full moon, new moon, crescent).
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
The cause of the different phases of the moon is the positioning of the Earth, moon, and Sun.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • The moon starts as a new moon, and then is a waxing crescent, then a first quarter, then a waxing gibbous, then a full moon, then a waning gibbous, then a last quarter, then a waning crescent, and back to a new moon.
  • It goes in a pattern.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • This statement is not true.
  • A lunar month takes almost 30 days to complete.
  • Earth months take between 28-31 days to complete.
  • Therefore, they are not the same thing.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Patterns are predictable because they are repeated.
  • There are no surprises because you know what is coming next.
  • You can use the pattern of moon phases to help you see what phase will come next and when.
