Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- What word could the author have used in place of the underlined word in a given sentence?
- Replace an underlined word or phrase in a given sentence with a more specific word.
- What is the meaning of the following phrase, as it is used in the passage?
- How could you change this nonliteral phrase into a literal phrase?
- Analyze the author’s word choice throughout the passage. Describe specific example of how the author’s word choice enhanced understanding and affected your understanding of the passage.
- Choose three areas in the passage in which you would change the word choice to improve the understanding of the story/information.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students will show their understanding of related words by replacing a given word with another that would maintain the meaning of the sentence.
- Students will use a more specific word in the sentence to replace a very general word. The new word should improve the quality of the sentence and enhance understanding.
- Students will use context clues to define a nonliteral phrase used in the passage.
- Students will create a literal phrase that could replace the nonliteral phrase in a passage. This change should not change the meaning of the passage.
- Students will identify specific words and phrases that allowed them to have a concise understanding of the passage. They will explain the importance of the word choice and tell how it clarified the meaning of that event/information in the passage.
- Students will identify three areas and make revisions that would involve changing word choice. Students should use or add specific verbs and adjectives that will improve the quality of the story. Readers should have a better understanding of the content/story after these changes are made.
