Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

  1. What are the natural components of a dam?  What are the human-made components?
  1. The carbon cycle is a naturally occurring cycle.  Explain the relationship between the natural components and the components that are a result of human activity with this cycle.
  1. Betsy thinks that human-made systems are more efficient than natural systems.  Do you agree with her?  Why or why not?

    • Coal is a natural component that is mined.
    • Humans burn the coal to create energy.
    • Animals breathe out carbon dioxide.
    • Plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.
    • Deforestation decreases the plants available to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
    • Decaying plants and animals produce carbon.  Sometimes these remains make fossil fuels.
    • Carbon dioxide is dissolved in the oceans.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
    • Natural systems can function without human intervention.
    • Humans interfere with natural systems to meet their needs.
    • Natural systems do not alter human-made systems.
    • Human made systems involve technology.
    • Technology can malfunction.
    • Special technicians are often needed to fix specialized technology.
    • Natural systems change according to the environment.
    • Organisms in an ecosystem can adapt to be able to survive when natural systems change.
    • Human-made systems may complete the same function as a natural system more quickly.
