Answer Key/Rubric
- Student lists examples of punctuation that can be used to indicate a pause or break. Examples of punctuation that can be used to indicate a pause or break include, but are not limited to, commas, dashes, or ellipses. The pause may occur in the middle of a sentence or at the end of it.
- Student states the function of specific types of punctuation that are used to indicate a pause or break. For example:
- Comma: Indicates nonessential or parenthetical information in a sentence.
- Dash: Indicates a change in thought or a sudden change in action.
- Ellipsis: Indicates ongoing action or thoughts that are still in process. It is also used to build suspense in a sentence.
- Student identifies examples of punctuation correctly used in a text to indicate a pause or break. Examples may include:
- Comma: Jamie, an honor roll student, received a perfect score on the exam.
- Dash: My mother says I can watch TV if I do just one thing—wash the dishes.
- Ellipsis: Suddenly… the firefighter heard the sound of the cat trapped in the wall.
- Student identifies examples of punctuation incorrectly used to indicate a pause or break. Punctuation may be used incorrectly if it is located in the wrong part of a sentence or if it offset information that is essential to the complete subject or predicate of the sentence.
- Student constructs original sentences that use punctuation correctly to indicate a pause or break. The sentences constructed correctly use a comma, dash, or ellipsis to indicate a pause or break. The student accurately matches the type of punctuation used in the sentence to its function.
- Student revises sentences to incorporate or correct the use of punctuation to indicate a pause or break. For example, the student correctly revises sentences to accurately create pauses or breaks through the use of a comma, dash, or ellipsis. The punctuation used matches its function.
