- Students define comma as a punctuation mark that is used to separate a simple series of words three or more items in length, to indicate a pause, or to distinguish particular phrases or clauses from the rest of a sentence.
- Students define semi-colon as a punctuation mark that is used to separate complex series of words where the list items contain commas so as to avoid confusion. They may also be used to separate two independent clauses.
- Student will identify situations when commas or semi-colons should be used to separate items in a series. Online sources include: http://www.grammarbook.com/grammar_quiz/semicolons_and_colons_1.asp.
- Student will create sentences using either commas or semi-colons to separate a list of items in a series, phrases, and clauses. Student will monitor understanding of when to use each punctuation mark and the effect each has on the reader’s understanding.
