Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons

- Write a summary of a reading passage including both explicit details and inferences.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Student cites explicit examples provided in a reading passage, locating details as a precursor to drawing inferences.
- Teacher will provide a conclusion from a reading passage. Student will identify details found in the reading passage that support the conclusion. Student should provide details that show they understand the connection between the teacher’s conclusion and the information provided in the text.
- Student will read a passage and provide a conclusion for the passage based on both implicit and explicit details found within the passage. Look for the conclusion to make sense based on both the overall passage and the details the student cites.
- Student will identify a claim of main idea (or theme) of a reading passage by providing details found in the text. These details may be explicit details, citing exact quotes from the text, or implicit details inferred from the explicit details.
- Student will read a reading passage and write a summary of the passage. The student will include explicit details from the story, citing them appropriately as well as inferences made. Each inference should be supported with a rationale for the inference that may or may not include which explicit details led to the inference. The student should be sure to provide a summary, rather than simply a list of the events or details from the passage.
