Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance
Activities
- Define key phrase in given sentences using context clues.
- Identify & define Greek and Latin roots in given words.
- Identify & define Greek and Latin roots in given words.
- Use context clues to define key phrases in given reading passage.
- Construct & define a list of words using common Greek & Latin roots.
- Use the phrases found in the given reading passage to write a new paragraph/story.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Student reads given sentences and uses the context clues within the sentences to define the key phrases. The student should independently identify the key phrases.
- Student builds a list of common Greek & Latin roots and uses the roots to help define the given words. The student will use their knowledge of the words (e.g. photograph, autograph) to determine the definition of the Greek or Latin root.
- Student is given a set of words. Student must define the words and create a list of the Greek & Latin roots found in the words. Student should attempt to add words with these roots (or others) to the list.
- Student is given a reading passage. Student must use only the context clues within the text to create definitions of the key phrases.
- Student will identify, define and list common Greek & Latin roots. Student will create lists with these roots, their definitions and will add to the lists with words discovered in independent reading. Student may discover new roots.
- Student will read a reading passage and identify key phrases. Student will use these key phrases to construct a new paragraph/story. The meaning of the key phrase should remain the same, the student should create new context to support the key phrase. For example, text given provides the phrase “Building the new community center seemed like a herculean task, but small efforts each day really add up.” Student would create a new story using “Herculean task/effort”.
