Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:

- Write a synonym for each of the following words.
- Which phrase is an example of figurative language?
- Replace the underlined word with a more precise word to improve the quality of the sentence.
- Rewrite the following sentence using figurative language.
- Evaluate the following paragraph and choose five words or phrases to change. Replace these words or phrases with more precise words. Include one example of figurative language. You may use a thesaurus to help find new words.
- Read the following passage. Explain how the author’s word choice and use of figurative language affected your understanding of the story. Give specific examples of precise words or phrases used.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students will write a word that has the same or similar meaning as each of the given words.
- Students will identify figurative language among a set of sentences or phrases. The sentences could contain idioms, similes, personification, etc.
- Students will choose a more precise word to replace a given word in a sentence. The new word should be more descriptive and should emphasize the tone of the sentence.
- Students should use a form of figurative language to express the thought in the given sentence. Students could use an idiom, simile, personification, etc. The new sentence should be more descriptive and interesting to read.
- Students will revise a paragraph, making changes in word choice. The quality of the writing should improve with more precise and descriptive words. One example of figurative language should be incorporated into the paragraph. Students could use an idiom, simile, personification, etc.
- Students will analyze a passage, focusing on the author’s word choice. They will discuss specific words, phrases and/or figurative language used by the author that were effective. They should discuss how this helped in their interpretation of the story.
