Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:

- When writing an address in a sentence, where do commas go?
- When writing an address on an envelope, where does the comma go?
- The following sentences contain addresses. Place commas in the addresses where they belong.
- The following envelopes are addressed. Place commas in the addresses where they belong.
- Write a friendly letter to a classmate. Address the envelope to send to your classmate. Be sure to include your return address on the envelope as well.
- Write a postcard to your parents telling them about the class fieldtrip. Address the postcard to send home.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students will explain that commas are used to separate the street address from the city/town and to separate the city/town from the state.
- Students will explain that a comma is used to separate the city/town from the state.
- Students will read sentences that contain addresses. They will place commas between street addresses and cities/towns. They will place commas between cities/towns and states.
- Students will place commas between cities/towns and states on the addressed envelopes.
- Students will write a friendly letter to a classmate. They will properly address the envelope with both their classmate’s address and their own return address. They will demonstrate proper comma usage when writing the addresses.
- Students will be given postcards to write a note to their parents about the class fieldtrip. They must write their mailing address on the card to send home. They will demonstrate proper comma usage when writing the address.
