Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:

Activities
- Explain the difference between past, present, and future tenses.
- Write the past, present, and future tenses of the following verb.
- Complete the following sentences with the verbs in the correct tenses.
- Read the following passage to determine what tense it is written in. Circle all words or phrases that help show that tense.
- Pretend you are on vacation. Choose someone to write a postcard to. Begin the postcard with three sentences telling what you have already done during your trip. Then write three sentences telling what you are going to do during the rest of your trip.
- Read the following passage and determine what tense it is written in. Rewrite the passage in another tense.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students should explain that the past already happened, the present is happening now, and the future is going to happen at a later time.
- Students will write the given verbs in the past, present, and future tenses.
- Students must read the sentences to determine if it is showing past, present, or future tense. They should then use the correct form of the verb to complete the sentence.
- Students will read a passage to determine the tense it is written in. They should identify the verbs as well as other clues that indicate when the events were taking place (yesterday, now, tomorrow, etc.).
- Students will be writing sentences using past tense verbs to describe what they had done on an imaginary trip. They will then write sentences using future tense verbs to tell what they plan to do on this imaginary trip. The sentences will be used to compose a postcard.
- Students will read a passage and identify the tense it is written in. They should look at the forms of the verbs as well as looking for other clues that indicate when the events are taking place. They will then choose one of the other tenses and rewrite the passage in that tense. They will need to change the verbs as well as any other words that indicate when the events are taking place. The new tense should be consistent throughout the passage.
