Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance
Activities
Given a text with maps, illustrations, and photographs,
- Where did the event occur?
- When did the event occur?
- What information can you gain from looking at the graphics in the text?
- What does the map key show?
- Of a map, illustration, or photograph, which would be the best feature to add to the passage? Explain how it would help the reader better understand the information.
- Why did the author use photographs to support the text? What additional information did the images provide?
Answer Key/Rubric
- Students will use a map, illustration, photograph or text to determine where a given event took place.
- Students will use a map, illustration, photograph or text to determine when a given event took place.
- Students will demonstrate their understanding of the purpose of the graphics. They will identify what information can be gained from the graphics.
- Students will use the map key to interpret what the symbols on the map stand for.
- Students will choose one of the features, based on the content of the passage and the purpose of the author. They will explain how this feature will contribute to the understanding of the content.
- The students will make a connection between the text and the photographs. They will explain how the photographs helped to show what the author was describing in the passage. They will discuss how captions can be used to provide additional information not found in the passage.
