Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student accurately identifies genres and subgenres of literary nonfiction and informational texts. Genres include, but are not limited to, biography, memoir, personal essays, speeches, and editorials.  

  2. Student correctly lists the titles of grade level literary non-fiction and informational texts read independently and proficiently.

  3. Student describes methods of selecting literary non-fiction and informational texts to read independently and proficiently. Methods include, but are not limited to, previewing the title and relevant supplemental information about the text and reading a sample page of the text while self-monitoring miscues.   

  4. Student determines whether a literary non-fiction and informational text can be read independently and proficiently by successfully executing methods to select an appropriate text.

  5. Student recognizes trends over time in the grade level literary non-fiction and informational texts independently read and proficiently comprehended. The trends recognized may include non-fiction genres, authors, and subjects that are most represented.

  6. Student analyzes trends over time in the grade level literary non-fiction and informational texts independently read and proficiently comprehended to develop a personal reading plan. The reading plan developed includes observations of reading habits based on the genres, authors and subjects that are most represented. The reading plan includes strategies the student will use to select appropriate literary non-fiction and informational texts that can be read independently and proficiently.
