Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

 

  1. What will you be writing about (what is your topic)?
  1. Who will be reading your writing (who is your audience)?
  1. Read the following article. Write one word, one phrase, and one sentence from the passage that were important in your understanding of the article.
  1. You will have 5 minutes to write a journal entry about the following.
  1. Describe each step of the writing process.
  1. Work through the steps of the writing process to compose a writing about the following prompt.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Students will explain the topic of their writing. The topic could be assigned by the teacher or could be chosen by the student.

  2. Students will tell who they are writing for. Possible audiences are themselves, other students, or the teacher.

  3. Students will read a non-fiction article. They will write a word, phrase, and sentence from the article that helps to summarize what they read.

  4. The students will complete a journal entry about a given topic. They will be limited to five minutes to complete the writing. This will be an informal writing.

  5. Students should first describe the prewriting step. They should explain that during this step the writer should choose a topic, brainstorm ideas, and organize information. They should then discuss the drafting step. They should explain that during this step the writer will compose their writing. Next, students should discuss the revising step. They should explain that during this step, the writer makes changes to improve the quality of the writing. The students should now talk about proofreading and editing. They should explain that corrections in spelling, grammar, and punctuation will occur during this step. Finally, students should discuss the publishing step. They should explain that the writer will write a final copy of the writing. The final copy should be error-free and ready to be shared with others.

  6. Students will complete prewriting exercises to brainstorm and organize information. They should utilize a graphic organizer. They will then write a first draft, skipping every other line to allow room for changes. Next they will revise the writing to improve the quality. They should look to improve word choice and sentence structure. They should look to add or remove details. Then they will edit and proofread to correct any mistakes in the writing. They should check for errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Finally, they will publish the writing.
