Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- Define sustainability.
- Define raw material and identify two examples.
- An example of a raw material is metals. Look around the classroom and make a list of all the items that are made of metal.
- Using the Internet or another resource, identify a list of products made from wood. What are some of the products you have used in the past that were made from wood? Were there any products you were surprised to find out were made from wood?
- Rocks are often overlooked as a raw material and even an artistic medium. Research different uses of rocks. Create a mini presentation to share with the class about an alternative use for rock(s).
- Challenge yourself to refrain from touching plastic for 2 hours. Write a journal entry about this task. Was it easy or difficult? How did you adapt your daily activities? What does this mean about our society?
- Make a book of facts about raw materials. What are some of the most common raw materials used in our country, and the world? What alternatives might we use if these materials were to run out?
Answer Key/Rubric
- Sustainability is the ability to be used, without being completely used up or destroyed.
- Raw material is the basic material from which a product is made.
Examples may include, but are not limited to: wood, minerals, plants, water, rocks, etc.
- Acceptable answers may include, but are not limited to: chair leg, parts of pens/pencils, radiator/heater, metal in computers, etc.
