Continuum of Activities

Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Identify one slow change to Earth’s surface.
  1. Identify one rapid change to Earth’s surface.
  1. Compare and contrast a method of slow change and rapid change to the Earth’s surface.
  1. Cause: it rains every day where a rock column is located. What is a possible effect?
  1. Draw conclusions on what is easier for a living thing to adjust to: a slow change or a rapid change to the Earth’s surface.

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Weathering
  • Erosion
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Volcanic activity
  • Hurricane
  • Earthquake
  • Land/Mud slides
  • Flood
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Both slow and rapid changes can change how the Earth looks.
  • Rapid changes happen almost instantly; slow changes happen over time.
  • Students should identify one slow and one rapid and explain how they are similar and different.
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • Effect: over time, the rock column may be worn down to almost nothing.
  • Effect: there may not be an immediate effect, but eventually the rock column will have a different shape due to the water eroding the surface
  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • A slow change will be easier to adjust to because it does not happen all at once.
  • A slow change is not very noticeable, so it will not take much adjustment.
  • Living things may adjust right along with a slow change and not even realize it is happening.
  • A rapid change to Earth’s surface may be very difficult for a living thing to adjust to it.
  • Almost instantly a habitat could be changed or destroyed, making it difficult to adjust.
