Continuum of Activities
The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.
This continuum of activities offers:
- Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
- Questions/activities that grow in complexity
- Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities
- Define pitch.
- Define loudness.
- Identify the characteristics of sound.
- Compare and contrast pitch and loudness.
- Sound travels through different mediums at different speeds. Why do people put their ear against the door instead of just standing next to the door when they are trying to listen to something?
- Frequency is the number of sound waves in a second. Pitch depends on the frequency of a sound. Explain how the two are related.
- Sarah tells you that pitch and loudness mean the same thing. Is Sarah correct? Critique her statement.
Answer Key/Rubric
- Pitch is how high or low a sound is.
- Loudness is the strength of the sound.
- Answers may include:
- Sound travels in waves
- Sound can have different frequencies/pitch
- Sound can have different amplitudes/volume
- Sound travels at different speeds through different mediums
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- Both are characteristics of sound
- Loudness has to do with the strength of a sound – based on its amplitude
- Pitch is how high or low the sound is – based on its frequency
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- Sound travels faster through solids
- Sound would travel faster through the door, rather than the air next to the door.
- People might put their ear up to the door to hear more clearly.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- A sound with a low frequency has a low pitch
- A sound with a high frequency has a high pitch.
- Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
- Sarah is not correct.
- Pitch and loudness are both characteristics of sound, but they are not the same thing.
- Pitch is how high or low a sound is.
- Loudness is the strength of the sound.
