Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons
  • Questions/activities that grow in complexity
  • Opportunities for differentiation for each student’s level of performance

Activities

  1. Define mass.
  1. Identify observable properties of matter.
  1. Compare and contrast shape and size.         
  1. Identify an object in your classroom and describe it to a partner in terms of its observable properties.
  1. “Two balls are the same size and shape. That means they have the same mass”. Critique this statement.
  1. You see a ball in the park. Construct three different statements about the ball using the physical properties of matter. Use your imagination.

  1. Acceptable responses may include, but are not limited to:
  • This statement is not true.
  • Mass is how much matter an object has.
  • Just because an object is the same size, does not mean it is has the same mass.
  • For example, a bowling ball and balloon can be the same size, but they have different masses.
