The News Literacy Project
First, mark your calendar for Feb. 2-6 for the seventh annual National News Literacy Week! During the week, the News Literacy Project offers special events and resources to help educators equip their students with the news literacy skills they need to become better informed and more civically engaged.
In the meantime, check out NLP’s News literacy for mental health and wellness resource hub, which features a 5-week “Brain Gains” planner themed around weekly “exercises” students can do to strengthen their ability to make healthy choices online.
News literacy education applies to all subjects and disciplines, but it’s also about more than academics — it’s about supporting student mental health and wellness in the age of AI, and during a time when social media use is near ubiquitous among teens.
News literacy teaches students how to think about news and information, not what to think. With the skills to recognize the characteristics of credible information, young people are prepared to make personal decisions about what to trust and act on.
Assigning each resource is simple on NLP’s Checkology® virtual classroom. Designed for grades 5-12, Checkology is your one-stop shop for teaching news literacy. Once you register, you’ll find hundreds of free resources — like quizzes, posters, downloadable lesson plans and classroom slides. You’ll also gain access to our interactive classroom, where you can register your students and assign them the platform’s core lessons and other activities. Make assignments and track student progress using our online grade book. Plus, educators can now enjoy streamlined access to Checkology through Clever.
