Celebrate Black History Month – Poem/Dance Contest

1/27/2023

You are invited to celebrate Black History Month with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Multi-Agency Black History Month Committee. The national theme for Black History Month 2023 is Black Resistance, which focuses on African Americans resistance to historic racism, and discrimination in all forms including statutory, employment, education, housing, economic, faith, sports, culture, etc. since America’s initial beginnings.

In observance of this year’s theme, the Committee will be hosting a Poem or Dance Contest among high school students to emphasize Black Resistance.  A winner will be selected from each of the categories.  Each winner will receive a prize and will be formally recognized at the event. Click here to learn more about the contest eligibility, rules, and submission deadline.

An event, a Black History Program, scheduled for February 23 from 12-1, includes a panel discussion, entertainment, slide show, and an awards ceremony announcing the winners of the contest. The virtual event will highlight four key topics in the furtherance of the national theme:

  • Education
  • Media
  • Voting
  • Church

To learn more or register for the virtual program, call 717-787-6166 or email blackhistorycommittee@pa.gov.
