Objectives

Students will be able to match and create equivalent fractions 9 out of 10 times after using hands-on manipulatives to demonstrate real-world equivalent fractions.

Duration

The lesson will begin and carry over throughout 2 math periods and then the students will complete a formal assessment after determining when they will be prepared.

Instructional Procedures

  1. The students will start the Do Now
    1. Shade in the equal parts and write a fraction to represent the model 
  2. Use Fraction bars to review and model the Do Now
  3. Hand out lesson worksheet- do the mini-lesson on equivalent fractions
  4. Using fraction bars, complete the practice lesson with table
    1. If particular students are struggling, pull them into a mall group to work individually with them 
  5. Mini Whiteboard practice while partnering students go up to the smart board to make the equivalent fraction 
    1. Assess knowledge
    2. Game- team points 
      1. Winning team gets to choose a small candy
  6. Formative Assessment
    1. Students can use models to help them visualize the fraction
