Rationale

The purpose of this lesson is to help students better understand the framework of career pathways and how they relate to their personal interests and the course selection process.

Vocabulary

Career Pathways - are an integrated collection of programs and services intended to develop students’ core academic, technical and employability skills.

Career Inventory -  tools that are designed to help individuals understand how a variety of personal attributes (i.e., interests, values, preferences, motivations, aptitudes and skills), impact their potential success and satisfaction with different career options.

Career Clusters - Careers grouped together because they share similar interests, strengths, and skills. 

Objectives

Students will correctly identify careers related to the 4 Career Pathways with 80% or higher accuracy.

Students will complete a Career Pathways Inventory and identify the Career Pathway correlates the strongest to their career interests with 100% accuracy.

Duration

This lesson takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Materials

Career Pathway Inventory .doc - Students will complete.
Career Pathway Selection Form - Futures.doc - Students will complete.
Career Pathways Quiz .doc - Students will complete.

Suggested Instructional Strategies

W: EQ will be posted and reviewed with students at the start lessons. 
H: Natasha Bedingfield song "Unwritten"  will serve as the hook for this lesson.
E: Strategies such as Think Pair Share will allow students to draw on personal experiences as they relate to each instructional activity. 
R:  The culminating activity requires students to review what they have learned and assimilate it with their own beliefs to identify their specific career pathway related to their career interests.
E:  The students will possess three documents at the end of this lesson including a graded quiz, a career inventory with results, and a Personal Career Pathway Selection!
T:  Modifications to this lesson will be made in accordance with students IEP's (specially designed instruction.) 
O:  This lesson is primarily student-student directed via individual completion of tasks or small group interaction.  Teacher directed instruction occurs intermittently at the beginning, middle and end of the lesson.

Instructional Procedures

 

FUTURES ~ Grades 6 & 7


SESSION ONE – Career Pathways Overview and Selection (DAY 4 of each 7-week Rotation)

 

1. Listen to and interpret Natasha Bedingfield’s song

 

 

Unwritten with the students. Have a general conversation regarding the importance of career exploration and planning and what begins heavily in 8th grade. Pair and share: Students discuss their top 2 career choices at this moment in time just to see where students are in their understanding/career planning process. Have some students to share their top career interests with the full group if willing. (10 min.)

 

2. Students work in groups of 2 to complete the

 

 

Career Pathways Quiz.

 

Review and discuss the correct answers with the full group. – (8 min.)

 

3.

 

Students complete the "Career Pathways Inventory" independently.

 

(Students will place a checkmark next to all careers of interest to them in each column. Students will then circle the pathway title that has the most checkmarks.) – (10 min.)

 

4. Physically group students in the room according to the 4 Career Pathways - just for a visual. - (5 min.)

 

5.

 

Distribute the "Career Pathway Selection" Form -

 

Students place a checkmark next to their career pathway. Make a copy of each student’s selection form for data analysis/future reference.)

 

– (5 min.)

 

6. Wrap up using remaining class time. Defer to the classroom teacher if the time is needed to review next steps with the students...(5 min.)

 

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment will occur during think pair share and will also occur at the completion of the student quiz, the career inventory, and personal career pathway choice.
