Rationale

Rationale: Students will explore the world of bugs through listening, gross motor, fine motor activities, using their 5 senses.

Objectives

The students will be able to orally explain the difference between living and non-living things.

The students will be able to identify what 3 things living things need(food, water, air)

The students will be able to name the body parts of bugs.

The students will create their own bug using art supplies.

Lesson Essential Question(s)

What do living things need to survive?

How do living things use body parts to meet their needs?

Duration

Whole group: 20 minutes

Center time:1 hr(15 minutes per group at bug center)

Final Project: 30 minutes

Materials

Materials: Book- The Very Quiet Cricket,Eric Carle; plastic bugs; magnifying glasses; bug picture cards; constuction paper; shape stencils; scissors; glue; preprinted labels with body parts of bugs

Suggested Instructional Strategies

Instructional Procedures

1. Read The Very Quiet Cricket to the class. Take magnifying glasses and go for a bug walk around the school.

2. Gather back at the circle rug. Review previous knowledge about what is living/non-living. Determine what a bug needs to live.

3. Introduce bug cards and plastic bugs during center time. When each group is at the bug center, ask questions about similarities and differences between bugs.

4. Center time wrap-up. Discuss what they did at each center. Review bug center and bug body parts.

5. End project: Make your own bug. Using construction paper and stencils, students must trace three shapes for body parts, cut 6 strips for legs, and cut two strips for antennae. After gluing parts an paper, students may decorate  and name their bugs.

Questions answered orally:

1. What do bugs need to live?

2. How many body parts do bugs have?

3. Where are a bug's antennae?

4. How many legs do bugs have?

5. How do bugs use their bodies?

Students must also correctly place peprinted labels of body parts on their final project.
