Suggested Instructional Strategies

W:  an advanced organizer
H:  I will read startling information aloud in a very serious tone at the start of the class.
E:  Cooperative learning, jigsaw students will need to learn the information well enough to teach it
R:  Discussion, cooperative learning, sharing their own ideas, talking chips strategy.
E: worksheet, discussion, ticket out
T:  cooperative learning, teacher assistance
O:  The students will start out with information, then individual activity, group work  in which they are expected to become experts and then they will reflect on their journey through this lesson with cooperative learning and the ticket out.

Instructional Procedures

Whole Class, Mini Lesson

Do now: When the students come into class read the following:

Every hour people throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles.

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours.

Americans create two kilograms of trash per day. That is enough to fill 63,000 garbage trucks each day.

Independent Activity, Small Group Activity

Bell ringer: What are you going to do to help?

Whole Class Discussion, Reflection

(Ticket Out the Door, Response Sheet, KWL, 3-2-1, etc.)

Ask each of the students to respond to the question.

Give them the advanced organizer and then let them off the hook by reading the rest of the information.

Since 2005 the U.S. government recorded the first-ever drop in the amount of trash produced from the previous year. Trash declined by 1.5 million metric tons from 2004-2005, partly due to an increase in recycling.

Make a prediction do you think the amount of trash has declined since 2005?

Whole class explain the  jigsaw strategy to the students while putting them into groups

Put the students into groups of 4. Assign each student in the group a number.

Ask each number to go to a specific area.

Inform the students that they are all experts and therefore they need to read and discuss the assigned section of the text, so that they know it and can teach it, because they will be going back to their original group and teaching their section.

Group work, jigsaw

The students will use the talking chip strategy while working in groups: see related materials and resources section.

After the students are in their original groups hand them each a poker chip or a slip of paper.

The student will learn their section of the text while the teacher moves around to each group to offer clarification if needed.

Then the students will return to their original group and teach them the information of which they have become experts.  The

Independent Activity

The students will all be sent to their own seats and given the Assess Your Understanding worksheet to be completed individually. They will be given ample time to complete the task however; it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes t complete.

Whole Class Discussion, Reflection, group work

(Ticket Out the Door, Response Sheet, KWL, 3-2-1, etc.)

After the students have been given ample time to complete the worksheet I will ask them to get into their original groups. Then I will ask them to answer the following question. What are the costs and benefits of recycling?

I will remind them that some examples of our natural resources are: , water, ,,trees, ,oil, and  coal,

What are the costs and benefits of controlling the usage of our natural resources?

They will be given about 3 minutes more if needed to discuss the questions as a group.

Then I will ask that each group respond to the first question and then I will ask each group to respond to the next question.

Note; the students will become familiar with the vocabulary from the jigsaw activity

Ticket out: How can you help conserve natural resources and curb pollution?

Formative Assessment

Cooperative learning discussion, classroom discussion, the ticket out and worksheets

Related Materials & Resources

The talking chips strategy: During group work each member of the group is given a chip. The group members than take turns by putting his/her chip in the center of the table. The members are only allowed to talk at the time their chip is in the center of the table. The members must wait until everyone has had his/her turn before speaking again.

Jigsaw: Students read different passages from the same text or several different texts

After reading their section, they take the role of “expert” then share their specific reading with a specific group or the entire class.
